When KVibe Productions’ founder Khoa Le was called in to complete the troubled Walt Before Mickey shoot, he saw it as an opportunity to do something special. Cast and crew rallied behind his enthusiasm and came together to help make that happen.
“The crew was demoralized when I got there,” says Le.
Yet, he kept on pushing and, in that way, the film’s production mirrors Disney’s own early struggles on his way to success. Walt Before Mickey takes us through these troubled times, showing some of Walt’s childhood in Missouri before bringing us to his first ‘animation bullpen’ in Kansas City where Disney and his team of collaborators began, and later to their newer Los Angeles home in the 1920s. The villains of the story take the form of opportunists trying to cash in on Disney’s genius along the way.
When the original director abandoned the project along with the director of photography, it didn’t look good for the future of production on Walt Before Mickey as cast and crew took a 3-week hiatus. However, when KVibe’s own Khoa Le got the call, he was able to fly out to Orlando in between snow storms in New Jersey, and immediately got the ball rolling again.
Disney himself once famously said, “I think it’s important to have a good hard failure when you’re young.”
Cast and crew are hoping the old genius’ words hold true, and their struggles and perseverance result in something special. Producers hope to have Walt Before Mickey in theaters or available through video on demand in June. Visit the official movie site here to pre-order a DVD copy of the film.
