When Kipany Productions reached out to us to help produce a new short film, KVibe was still in its early infancy stage, so no one was really sure what to expect. However, the material ended up being a perfect match for the personnel and Business is Dead turned into a great success.
KVibe founder Khoa Le helped put the project together, working mainly as the director of photography and producer. First-time writer/director Vito LaBruno had written an amazing script, full of intrigue, and sprinkled with hilarious moments of comic relief. Pre-production time was spent wisely, which was obvious when production started smoothly and continued on that way for the entirety of the shoot.
The production lasted for 3 days, with the crew putting in 16-19 hours per day. The budget was tight and the range of equipment was relatively limited, with a DSLR serving as the primary camera. There were also no grips or gaffers, only a couple of production assistants to help out, making the stunning results even more impressive.
At the time, KVibe Production’s own Khoa Le hadn’t had the experience of working with the assistance of any type of crew, so the fact that it was somewhat uneventful, with no hiccups or curve balls, is a testament to his efficiency and workmanship. He didn’t have a chance to really familiarize himself with the script either, so much of the creative decisions were made on the fly.
The results of this spontaneous creativity were dazzling! Check out the Goodfellas-style opening and the rest of the fun short in our Films section.
