We’ve talked a lot at KVibe about the necessity of commercial videos to promote yourself, your product, or your service. The creation of a quality production isn’t easy and there’s plenty of room for error, but in order to even have a chance at an effective video, you must know who you’re talking to before you open your mouth.
The biggest mistake in commercial video production is deciding on a strategy, format, and means of delivery before researching the target audience. You must customize the strategy and technology for the preferences of your audience, or you’re just wasting your time. The world may be transforming into a global village, but that’s just led to overwhelming access to information. This has enabled audiences to define and refine their taste. They know what they like now.
It’s no longer about telling your audience what you need them to hear. It’s about telling them what they want to hear, while still making your point. You must sell, but indirectly, while the main objective has to be to entertain. To accomplish this, though, will take some work.
You must research your target audience diligently. You have to know the simple things like their age, location, occupation, and income. You need to find out where they hang out, online and off, what types of conversations they’re having, and how they prefer to receive media. Then, you must consider why they need your product or service, how it helps them, how it teaches them. You must research your competition, as well, and observe how they engage with the audience. Lastly, and most importantly, you need to appeal to your audience’s emotions because, after all, why should they believe you?
The thing is, if you do the necessary leg work and get to know your audience, the creative possibilities expand. Once you know who they are and what they prefer, you can be bold and make statements that may be inappropriate for other audiences. Your audience will understand this and, suddenly, you’ll share a mutual understanding with them. If your audience believes that you’re talking to them, specifically, they’ll be more inclined to listen.
