Khoa and Minow discussed Khoa’s personal journey to becoming the director of Walt Before Mickey and the challenges of working with a very limited budget and short schedule, shooting a period film in several different locations, and joining the ambitious project at the last minute.
After several members of the original crew abandoned the production, it all seemed to be coming off the rails and, in the interview, Khoa talked to Minow about the fateful phone call he received from a friend asking him if he wanted to make his first feature film.
Khoa recalled how he was growing his business at the time and knew that he’d have to make sacrifices. He knew the shoot would require him to step away from his business for at least a few months and needed to decide if the opportunity could propel his career or hinder it.
In the end, the Walt Before Mickey shoot required Khoa to step away from his company for almost an entire year and when he arrived on set, he found himself surrounded by people who had worked on Pirates of the Caribbean and The Fast and The Furious and felt intimidated.
However, as Khoa told Minow, he had already gained a lot of experience in running and growing a business and knew how to lead. He viewed the entire situation as a chance to learn and grow and believes that had everything went smoothly, then he would’ve just ended up having to make the same mistakes on his next feature film production.
Khoa couldn’t be happier with the experience or with the final product and talked to Minow about how he, throughout the process, gained a newfound understanding of and appreciation for what Walt Disney truly accomplished in his life.
