With Walt Before Mickey, KVibe Productions’ first full-length feature film directed by founder Khoa Le, currently playing in theaters, we thought it’d be a good time to look back at another famous entertainment artist who refused to give up.
Martin Scorsese, much like Walt Disney, is known to most as an incredibly talented and popular artist who seems to have always been loved and admired. However, that wasn’t always the case and, like Disney, Scorsese faced his share of failures.
So, in the spirit of Walt Disney, let’s take a closer look at what made Scorsese push on when all seemed lost and ultimately become a filmmaking master.
His childhood years weren’t without their struggles.
One of the biggest reasons that Khoa and KVibe got involved in Walt Before Mickey was the opportunity it presented to portray a side of a legend that few know much about. Everyone knows about the good times, but what the bad ones?
And just as Disney experienced humble beginnings and his share of troubles and struggles, Scorsese had his own issues at a young age that not many are aware of.
First of all, the future film legend had chronic asthma as a child which kept from participating in normal childhood activities and limited him to spending most of his time indoors.
But rather than sitting around doing nothing, Scorsese would either head to the theater to catch a movie or watch life outside on the city streets from the windows of his home.
These two activities would influence and inspire him as he got older and eventually became a film director. The point is, Scorsese turned his early struggles into strengths rather than allowing them to hold him back, just as Walt Disney did, which you can see in Walt Before Mickey.
His early career years weren’t easy either.
The main part of Disney’s life covered in Walt Before Mickey is his early career years, a period in which he endured failure after failure and was confronted with obstacle after obstacle yet kept at it, and Scorsese’s early career years were similar.
In 1977, after finding early success with films like Mean Streets and Taxi Driver, Scorsese had a wild idea, much like many of Disney’s which were often met with doubt. Scorsese decided to make a musical, not a very popular genre at the time.
The result, New York, New York, was a critical and commercial flop and sent Scorsese into a downward spiral that eventually found him hospitalized after nearly having a stroke.
However, just like Disney, Scorsese didn’t allow that failure to keep him down for good. He rose up and moved on to his next project, which just so happened to be Raging Bull, a film now on many best-ever lists.
Scorsese, like Disney, didn’t just skate to success.
The bottom line is that Scorsese’s journey to success wasn’t an easy one nor one without its share of bumps in the road, but he never gave up and, now, he’s a household name with countless successful projects under it, and like Disney, he’s touched many people’s lives along the way.
If you’re sensing a pattern here, you’re right. Whether you’re an American icon, a famous film director, or an aspiring artist, you’ll be confronted with failure at some point in your life. It’s inevitable.
But if you can find a way to push on, to continue to be inspired and motivated, then no amount of failures can stop you. They can only teach you and make you stronger.
Our hope with Walt Before Mickey wasn’t just for it to be film that shows audiences a side of Disney they never knew about, but also for it to give audiences a newfound respect for the legend.
After all, he didn’t just find immediate success and start an empire overnight and he had to experience plenty of doubt and adversity along the way, but he never gave up.
